SUMMARY:Help for the Helper: The Effects of Trauma and Compassion Fatigue on the Lawyer Who Cares
DESCRIPTION:Many of us were attracted to the legal profession because we care about people and want to help them. Secondary or vicarious trauma can be the cumulative effect of listening to a client or witness relay graphic stories and experiences. Those who experience compassion fatigue tend to take on the pain\, suffering and burdens of the people they are helping. It is an exhaustion that is felt physically\, emotionally\, or mentally and can affect numerous areas of your life\, often leaving you feeling numb. The consequences of shrugging it off can be catastrophic. \nJoin us on August 24 when Mr. Quinn will discuss:\n1. The early warning signs of impairment\, with special emphasis on stress\, burnout\, trauma and\ncompassion fatigue.\n2. The free services that Lawyers Assistance Programs provide to lawyers\, judges\, their family members\nand law students.\n3. A close look at what barriers exist that prevent lawyers and judges from seeking the help they need\nwill be provided.\n4. The role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental\nillness in the legal profession.\n5. How best to approach the impaired individual.

SUMMARY:“I Don’t Belong” - Imposter Syndrome in the Legal Profession
DESCRIPTION:“I Don’t Belong” – Imposter Syndrome in the Legal Profession\n1 Ethics Credit\nFriday\, April 1\n8:00 AM – 9:00 AM (in person or virtual attendance)\nCost: $15:00 \nPresented by:\nBrian S Quinn\, Esq\nLawyers Concerned For Lawyers \nImposter syndrome\, also called perceived fraudulence\, involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite your education\, experience\, and accomplishments. While early studies focused on highly successful women\, it is now clear that it can affect anyone in the legal profession – from law students to Big Law executives. \nLiving in constant fear of discovery\, you strive for perfection in everything you do. You might feel guilty or worthless when you can’t achieve it\, not to mention burned out and overwhelmed by your continued efforts. The results can be devastating. \nTrue imposter feelings involve self-doubt\, uncertainty about your talents and abilities. But what if you find yourself in an environment where your peers fail to make room for you or imply you don’t deserve your success? Along with the more traditional factors\, gender bias and institutionalized racism can also play a significant part in imposter feelings. Even if only perceived\, they can surely reinforce the feeling you don’t belong. \nHear our experienced speaker discuss the impact of the untimely death of his mentor and how trying to “fill his shoes” became more than a job\, it took over his life. The consequences were a decades long effort to cope with and then conceal those feelings with alcohol and drugs.
